One of Those Days!

Come on, we’ve all had one of those days.

But we tend to lie to ourselves, and others, when they ask:

‘So how are you?’ they ask.

‘I’m fine, how about you?’ you reply, even though it’s a total lie.

So why do we do it:

  • To save ourselves the trouble of having to explain.
  • To save the other person the earache of listening to our problems.
  • Or just because it’s easier not to tell the truth.

A toddlers breath

I’m going off script here, but I wanted to try my hand at the DP Challenge.

We were asked to think of a sound which means the most to us. Well, for me, it was the sound of my son breathing when he was sleeping. Strange, you might think. But let me tell you why.

From the age of three, up until he had his dysfunctional tonsils removed when he was four, my son suffered from sleep apnea. His right tonsil was so grossly enlarged, he would stop breathing. I spent countless nights either, listening at his bedroom door, or creeping in and out of his room like a jack-in-the-box.

It was heart-rendering to know each night I put him to bed, I could wake the following morning to find him gone. So hearing him breathing was a treasured gift. I was beside myself when the operation was scheduled, scared of course, but ecstatic my son had a chance.

The first few nights after, I still found myself creeping into his room. But this time, to listen to his soft gentle breaths, and I cried tears of joy over that beautiful sound.

You see, we take something as simple as breathing for granted. Take the time to listen, really listen to the sound, and maybe you’ll understand what I mean.

The birth of a monster.

Let’s start at the beginning.

I’m not—and probably never will be—the next long-awaited author. And I will no doubt, never see my work as a market leader. But it has never been my intention to do so.

You see, I want to be able to self-publish my book(s) the way I intended to write it(them). So why am I led to believe I have to follow a certain way of doing this. I’m sure you have heard or seen the comments of a certain book published recently. That’s my point!

Okay, I’ve never read it, it’s not the sort of book I would bother picking up. But if it’s grammatically correct, and punctuation is where it should be, then what’s the problem. It has to have something which attracts the readers, otherwise it wouldn’t have sold so many copies.

So over the coming weeks, I will be talking about the following subjects:

  • Who says what is right or wrong.
  • Why should we follow a set protocol.
  • What is bad writing.

Plus much more.

Feel free to join me, comments are always welcome. But please, keep it clean and be respectful of others.
